Animate Mobiles

How do we interact with technology that has active body language? This project explores a future vision of shape-changing devices that actively use their body language to express relational aspects of the interaction.

As humans, we use body language mostly without explicit notice. It may therefore provide a helpful means to make our interaction with technology more natural, and more subtle.

In this project, we investigate devices that have body language, and how this body language can be designed. The current prototype reacts differently to different users and situations, varying across different spaces around the device. Its behaviour ranges from shy to curious.

Fabian Hemmert
Hello, my name is Fabian Hemmert. I am a design researcher. My research is concerned with our body's role in our interactions with technology. I am a professor for interface and user experience design at the University of Wuppertal. Previously, I have been a postdoctoral researcher at the Design Research Lab at the Berlin University of the Arts, in collaboration with Telekom Innovation Labs. Before that, I worked for Nintendo and Marvel Comics. Currently, I investigate embodied interaction with the digital world.
